Thanks to current research and renewed interest in dry eye as a potentially serious threat to the eye's health, there are many new and very effective means of treating the condition.

A breakthrough, long acting lubricating drop (Oasis® Tears) is available for relief of symptoms and long term reduction of tear osmolarity ("saltiness") which, in turn, helps to heal the damaged surface cells of the cornea.
Prescription anti-inflammatory eye drops (Lotemax® and Restasis®) can be used with doctors' guidance to reduce irritation on the surface of the eye and in the tear glands. This can lead to enhanced production of one's own tears and significant long term improvement.
Tiny soft plugs of different kinds can be inserted in the tear drainage ducts of the eye lids as a simple office procedure to allow the eye to retain more of its own natural tears as well as any applied lubricant drops.
Management of eye lid infections and inflammations (blepharitis) is also often important since the eye lids play a critical role in production and spreading of many important components of the tear film.
In addition, there are many environmental modifications, nutritional supplementations and other measures that can be taken that can lead to significant relief for dry eye sufferers. Each person is different and may require a carefully customized treatment plan to effectively manage their particular dry eye problem.
